    How?

    April 28, 2007

How does one talk to a person who has lost his father ?
The concerned person is my mama (my mother’s brother) who lost his father on the 26th night.
I spoke to him last evening, but it didn’t go very well with him and also with me as I don’t know the way a person should converse in such situations.

Our brief conversation unfolded in such a manner:
Me: Pranam Mama. Aap kaise hain? (How are you, mama?)
Mama: kaisa hunga ? (how do u expect one to be?)

After a minute of speechless conversation, he hung up and I was left astonished and sheepish; embarrassed by the way the conversation turned out to be.
